Annaprāśana Samskāra (Leicester) – Hindu first-grain ceremony
The annaprāśana samskāra, is one of the sixteen Hindu samskāras (sacraments), in which a child receives their first grain (or solid food) & is usually preformed after 6 months when the baby shows his/her first teeth. It marks an infant’s first intake of food other than his/her mother’s milk. The term annaprāśana literally means “feeding of boiled rice”. This rite is performed as a special ceremony in most Hindu family homes, for young girls and boys.
Mundan Samskāra (Leicester) – Hindu head shaving ceremony
The mundana samskāra, is the eighth of the sixteen Hindu samskāras (sacraments), in which a child receives their first haircut. The hair from birth is considered to be associated with past karma from previous lives. Thus at the time of the mundana, the child is freshly shaven to signify freedom from the past and moving into the future. The rite is performed as a special ceremony in most Hindu family homes, for young girls and boys.
